UCSF School of Medicine and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals
Division of Critical Care Medicine, Department of Pediatrics
HS Clinical Faculty Series
The Division of Critical Care Medicine at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals and the Department of Pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) are seeking dedicated hospitalists to join our teams in the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), and Transitional Care Unit (TCUP).
Appointments will be at the Instructor or Assistant Professor rank within the Health Sciences (HS) Clinical faculty series, commensurate with experience and training.
Position Overview:
The selected candidates will join a leading academic medical center and an established training program, contributing to the Department of Pediatrics’ mission of excellence in research, education, and patient care.
In this role, you will provide direct care to critically ill infants, children, adolescents, and adults in the PCICU, PICU, or TCUP. While each faculty member will be primarily assigned to one unit, there may be opportunities to cross-train and provide coverage in other areas depending on interests and operational needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as a frontline clinician during both day and night shifts under the
supervision of Pediatric Critical Care Attending Physicians.
- Perform procedures (e.g., intubation, central and arterial line placement,
sedation) with appropriate supervision.
- Participate in the management of complex patients, including those requiring
artificial life support such as ECMO and VAD.
- Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team including cardiothoracic surgeons,
nurse practitioners, residents, fellows, and faculty.
- Attend and contribute to educational conferences, quality improvement initiatives,
and research opportunities if desired.
Minimum Qualifications:
- MD or equivalent degree
- Licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of California
- Board-eligible or board-certified in Pediatrics
Preferred Qualifications:
- Current certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Basic Life
Support (BLS)
- A strong interest in a career in academic pediatrics, specifically pediatric critical care and/or pediatric cardiology
- Excellent clinical communication and teamwork skills
Why This Opportunity Stands Out:
- Ideal for Early-Career Physicians: This is an excellent opportunity for recent pediatric residency graduates looking to gain experience in high-acuity settings while exploring career paths in pediatric critical care, cardiology, or other acute care specialties.
- Robust Clinical Experience: Work alongside expert faculty to care for complex patients, including those with congenital heart disease, and develop procedural and diagnostic skills in a supportive teaching environment.
- Flexible Scheduling: Shifts will include both daytime and overnight coverage.
We are open to discussing scheduling preferences, including applicants with interest in night coverage.
- Collaborative Environment: You will be part of a team that values professional development, mentorship, and collaboration across disciplines.
- Position Availability: We are currently seeking three faculty to join the PCICU team and one faculty member for the PICU/TCUP team. Additional moonlighting opportunities within the Benioff Children's Hospital system may also be available.
