Job Description:

Division of Critical Care Medicine HS Clinical Faculty

UCSF School of Medicine and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals Division of Critical Care Medicine, Department of Pediatrics

HS Clinical Faculty Series

The Division of Critical Care Medicine at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals and the Department of Pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco, are seeking dedicated hospitalists for the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), and Transitional Care Unit (TCUP). These appointments will be at the Instructor rank within the HS Clinical faculty series.

Position Overview:

The selected candidates will join a leading academic medical center and an established training program, contributing to the Department of Pediatrics' mission of excellence in research, education, and patient care.

As Pediatric Critical Care clinical faculty, you will play a critical role in the care of infants, children, adolescents, and adults admitted to the PCICU, PICU, and TCUP. Successful applicants will be primarily assigned to one of the three units (PCICU, PICU, or TCUP), but will have the ability to work in either of the other two settings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a frontline clinician during day and night shifts in the PCICU, PICU, or TCUP, providing care under the supervision of Pediatric Critical Care Attending Physicians.
  • Provision, with supervision, of medical procedures such as intubation, central/arterial line placement, and conscious sedation.
  • Management, with supervision, of artificial life-sustaining devices such as ECMO and VAD.
  • Evaluate and manage acute and critical illnesses, assisting with critical care procedures such as airway management, vascular access, resuscitation, and other cardiac procedures under direct supervision.
  • Collaborate within a dynamic, multidisciplinary team, including pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons, nursing staff, pediatric subspecialty attendings and fellows, critical care attendings and fellows, pediatric residents, and experienced Nurse Practitioners.
  • Participate in educational conferences, quality improvement initiatives, and research activities as desired.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Medical degree and license
  • Board-certified or board-eligible in Pediatrics
  • Certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A strong interest in a career in academic pediatrics, specifically pediatric critical care and/or pediatric cardiology.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to engage across diverse forums.

Why This Opportunity Stands Out:

  • Unique Learning Environment: This role offers a valuable opportunity for recent pediatric residency or fellowship graduates who are considering or preparing for fellowships in cardiology or critical care, or other careers in pediatric acute care. You will gain hands-on experience in managing complex, high-acuity patients and practice procedural skills under the guidance of expert UCSF faculty. This includes advanced exposure to complex congenital cardiac anatomy and pathophysiology.
  • Flexible Work Schedule: Standard work shifts will include both daytime and overnight hours, with participation in the backup/jeopardy call system for the Nurse Practitioner and hospitalist group. We will make every effort to accommodate applicants who prefer overnight shifts.
  • Opportunities for Diverse Practice: We are looking to hire 3 hospitalists to primarily join the PCICU Team and 1 hospitalist to join the PICU/TCUP Team with opportunities for each physician to cross train and cover as desire and as operational needs allow. There may be additional moonlighting opportunities within BCH as well.
