The Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital/ Harvard Medical School is now offering a 1-year advanced fellowship in Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO).
We are currently seeking pediatric critical care medicine board eligible/board certified physicians who are looking to advance their training in ECMO.
We are accepting applications for the upcoming academic year (start date: July, 1 2024). The application deadline is December 31st, 2023. Successful candidates will be invited to interview virtually on a rolling basis. A final decision will be made in January, 2024.
Of note, this is a non-ACGME accredited fellowship.
Boston Children's Hospital (BCH) ECMO Program is run by a multi-disciplinary team of pediatric intensivists, cardiac intensivists, cardiac surgeons, nurses, and specially trained respiratory therapists. There are about 60-70 ECMO cases per year which include a wide range of indications, reflecting the unique patients conditions we care for such as neonatal congenital diaphragmatic hernia, complex congenital cardiac anomalies, and those awaiting heart/lung transplant. There is also an active ECMO simulation program.
The ECMO fellow will be based out of our high volume 42-bed medical/surgical ICU which admits a broad spectrum of medical pathology and complex surgical diagnoses, where they will complete 10-12 weeks of service time. The fellow will also rotate through the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit which is a 42-bed unit and receives ~900 cardiopulmonary bypass cases as well as 250 off-pump cases and 2500 cases in the catheterization lab and imaging suite.
The ECMO fellow will complete further rotations in Perfusion medicine (Cardiopulmonary Bypass), Cardiac Anesthesia, Echocardiography, Anticoagulation, Interventional Cardiology, and Transfusion medicine.
