Chief of Critical Care Medicine, Children’s National Hospital
Children's National Hospital seeks a new chief of the Division of Critical Care Medicine who oversee clinical care, research, and education for the division. The chief recruits and supervises the division’s staff, develops the division’s budget, and manages its financial performance. The chief is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the division, promoting and monitoring the academic success of the division's faculty, ensuring appropriate mentorship, and enhancing educational and advocacy initiatives.
About the Division of Critical Care Medicine
The Division of Critical Care Medicine has a regional and national reputation for excellence in clinical care, research, and education. The division currently includes 22 Critical Care Medicine physician faculty, three physician hospitalists, one PhD statistician, four PICU advanced practice providers, and two neurocritical care advanced practice providers, with plans to expand the faculty in the next fiscal year. There are 47 PICU beds and one resuscitation room, with 14 additional beds anticipated to open in the Spring of 2026. Other programs under the oversight of Critical Care Medicine faculty include Respiratory Therapy, Transport Medicine, Sedation, Ethics, and Simulation. Faculty members have been successful in obtaining NIH funding, with an R01 award and four K-awards. There are 17 Critical Care Medicine fellows, emanating from the top pediatrics training programs.

In fiscal year 2023, Children’s National received approximately $120M in research funding including 70% from the NIH and other federal agencies. The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences is the primary academic partner for Children’s National and there are additional affiliations with the NIH, Johns Hopkins University, and Virginia Tech.
Qualifications
We are seeking an individual who has demonstrated outstanding skills as a clinician, researcher, and leader in critical care medicine. The individual will be an Associate or Full Professor with evidence of scholarship in pediatric critical care medicine. The individual should be a strong communicator and collaborator, with potential to enhance philanthropic support of the program.
Minimum Education
- Medical Doctor (M.D.) degree from an accredited medical school. (Required)
Required Licenses and Certifications
- Fully licensed and credentialed attending staff category physician on the medical staff of Children’s National Medical Center. (Required)
- Board certified or eligible for board certification in primary practice specialty. (Required)
- Board certification in relevant secondary specialty. (Preferred)
