Children’s Hospital Los Angeles

The Heart Institute at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles has over 1,000 admissions each year to our 24 bed CTICU of which over 800 are major cardiac surgical cases. We also care for one of the largest single ventricle patient populations in the country. The 4th year trainees will have exposure to ventricular assist devices, ECMO, transplantation, cardiac failure management, as well as pre-operative and post-operative care of pediatric congenital heart disease.

Our training program is tailored to the individual’s prior experience and skills.  For those with prior cardiology experience we emphasize critical care knowledge.  For those with critical care experience we emphasize cardiology knowledge.  Rotations include but are not limited to  echocardiography, cardiac anesthesia, cardiac ORs, cardiac catheterization lab, heart failure and transplantation, general anesthesia, electrophysiology, and international cardiac mission opportunities.  Fellows are also enrolled in our Excellence in Leadership in Healthcare program, which is unique to our program. This yearlong program emphasizes the development of leadership skills through readings, small group work, assessment tools, and self-reflection manuscripts.  Fellows will have one-on-one teaching and journal article discussions with faculty.  Finally, the 4th year fellows are responsible for a CTICU educational curriculum for junior fellows.  This is consistent with our mission to develop physician leaders and educators.
