Seattle Children's Hospital ICU Hospitalist Job Description
Role: The ICU Hospitalist works collaboratively with other members of the ICU team to ensure safe and timely provision of critical care services to patients in the ICU. The ICU Hospitalist has a full-time faculty appointment in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, and Children's University Medical Group (CUMG) with the responsibilities, benefits, and privileges afforded to UW Pediatrics faculty. Academic support is provided through the Pediatric Critical Care Division. Seattle Children's Research Institute, and/or the UW Department of Pediatrics.
Oversight/supervision: The ICU Hospitalist will work in a collaborative relationship with the ICU Attending Physician. The ICU Hospitalist is expected to keep the ICU Attending apprised of key changes in patient status and to work with the ICU Attending Physicians to develop and implement care plans. The ICU Hospitalist reports to the Division Chief of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and Chair of the UW Department of Pediatrics.
Specific tasks/responsibilities: The ICU Hospitalist adds depth and breadth to the ICU provider team. Flexibility and willingness to perform a variety of tasks is essential to supporting optimum patient care
• The ICU Hospitalist will provide coordination and oversight of care in the SCH PICU and/or CICU in collaboration with the ICU Attending Physician.
• The ICU Hospitalist primarily functions to ensure that care team plans are implemented in a timely manner. This may involve working with ICU rotating residents, ICU APPs, and other trainees, providing education within the scope of the Hospitalist's experience.
• The ICU Hospitalist often functions as a first contact, front line provider and will respond to bedside team inquiries, enter orders, communicate with consultants, update patients/families, and escalate concerns to the ICU Attending as appropriate.
• The ICU Hospitalist may perform procedures and administer procedural sedation consistent with individual hospital privileges, which are granted based on specific training and experience.
• The ICU Hospitalist may be the ICU provider for rapid response team (RRT) patient evaluation and provide ED consultation as determined by the ICU Attending Physician.
• Availability for daytime, night and weekend work is expected. Total clinical work hours are in general alignment with pediatric hospitalists working in other Seattle Children's care sites, but specific hours and shifts will be determined by ICU scheduling needs. Clinical work done above and beyond budgeted time may be eligible for additional compensation subject to UW Department of Pediatrics policies.
• The ICU Hospitalist will participate in Division QI and Patient Safety activities
• The ICU Hospitalist role is an annual appointment for the academic year (July-June) with an opportunity for reappointment dependent on programmatic needs and budgetary support.
