A dynamic, multidisciplinary resource of original and distributed educational and practical materials for pediatric critical care practitioners

John Q. Lung, MD, at a major teaching institution in New England, gives a state-of-the-art lecture every year about new methods of mechanical ventilation. Sarah L. Cranium, MD, at a private institution in the Southwest, has the best outcome data following severe head injury of children and has prepared a cogent protocol to care for these patients. Jane R. Quality, RN is a leader in the field of outcomes research and has much to share regarding quality improvement for all PICU's. Sarah C.V. Line, MD, has prepared a thoughtful review of the literature regarding central line complications in pediatric patients.

Why should the expertise of these health care professionals only be available locally, at national meetings, or in infrequent and long in-press paper textbooks? Now there is a dynamic, readily accessible, inexpensive medium for these authors to share their knowledge with the world:

This File Cabinet intends to collect both original, peer-reviewed submissions, and links around the web that would allow the reader access to up-to-date lectures, literature reviews, or institution-based protocols, such as critical/clinical pathways, on topics pertinent to our field. Examples of local material include a discussion of DKA and cerebral edema and a meta-analysis of ribavirin for RSV. Croup Syndromes and Benzodiazepines and Breathing, represent linked resources, incorporated seamlessly into appropriate folders. Though organized roughly by organ systems, the intent is not to mimic a comprehensive print textbook, but to gather pertient educational resources into a "virtual" file cabinet.

So if you have a lecture, review, or pathway that you, your colleagues, or your institution has worked hard on already, don't keep it to yourself. Share it with health professionals around the world who care for critically ill and injured children by sending it in to us. Original articles sent to PedsCCM's File Cabinet will be peer-reviewed prior to posting to insure a reasonable level of quality and consistency. The review process intends to work with authors to facilitate inclusion, not exclusion, of documents. (Also note that we believe authors should retain copyright to their work, not publishers; see our editorial and copyright notes.) As with other forms of publication, the reader must be the final judge of a document's utility and validity. Links to documents elsewhere have been evaluated by PedsCCM editors, but we cannot vouch for the rigor of their review process.
