PedsCCM Case Reports (formerly the Rare Case Registry)
Katherine Biagas, editor
Contents
Background
The PICU discussion list has taught us that we all see rare cases or unusual presentations of common conditions. We go to the standard medical literature and may or may not find a case report similar to ours. The textbooks are, shall we say, less than illuminating in these situations. We call for help on the PICU list and sometimes find others with similar experiences.
Wouldn't it be nice to have an easily accessible resource to look for these reports? Few people take the time and trouble of submitting a formal case report to the usual medical journals. None of us see enough of any one of these to write up a series. Chart reviews are laborious and boring!
We propose that Case Reports in Pediatric Critical Care on the PedsCCM Web site is an answer. We would like to collect brief reports of patients you care for that are either incredibly interesting or strange enough that you've never seen such a presentation before.
Update October 21, 1998: With the proliferation of case reports of both common and uncommon scenarios on the web that offer educational rewards, this section has now been more appropriately entitled "Case Reports in Pediatric Critical Care."
