Back to SCCM Pediatric SectionPediatric Critical Care Fellowship Directors Meeting
June 25, 2000
12:00-1:30 PM
Montreal, Quebec
Canada
- Pediatric Critical Care Match:
- Deadline for entering Match
- Deadline for submission of Match List: October 11, 2000
- Match Day: November 8, 2000
- A relatively short discussion ensued concerning rumors regarding programs accepting trainees outside the Match. These rumors have been researched with great detail by Rich Brilli, M.D. and have been unfounded in most cases. Previous programs which we knew were not participating in the Match continue to be the ones no participating. Discussion also surrounded select circumstances in which it would be acceptable for fellows to be taken outside the match, specifically cases where a fellowship position needed to be linked to a research grant application. No other circumstances seemed to meet the need for stepping out of the Match.
- A letter was sent to Dr. Tunneson at the ABP signed by Rich Brilli, M.D. and Stephanie Storgion, M.D. requesting that the 2001 Critical Care Match be synchronized with other pediatric subspecialty matches, e.g. emergency medicine, to allow for couples matching together.
- New Program Requirements:
- The requirements by the ACGME in accrediting programs were mentioned specifically minimal numbers of cardiovascular surgical cases and head trauma/multiple trauma patients.
- These requirements can be met by linking with another program to fill a gap in an area.
- Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Journal Club:
- Recognition of Barry Markovitz, M.D. for maintaining this website at http://pedsccm.org/EBJournal_club.html
- Recommendation to use a tool for training fellows in Evidence Based Medicine
- Reviews solicited from fellows of article; rules and format available on the website.
- New on the website is a download for Palm Pilots for critical appraisals.
- PICU book on the Internet continues to seek authors for chapters, information and format also on the website.
- Quality of Training Committee
- Michelle Mariscalco, M.D., chairperson
- Graduate Medical Education Office
- Required to provide education in the following areas for all primary and advanced level trainees:
- Physician as Scientist
- Statistics analysis
- Research
- Continuous Quality Improvement
- Malpractice/Risk Management
- Ethics
- Physician as educator
- Unclear as to how GME office will meet these requirements
- Video programs
- Live lectures
- Recommended that programs assign fellows to hospital committees that pertain to critical care practice to expose them to CQI and peer review process
- Retreats for fellows to focus on stressors of critical care training and practice
- Suggested surveys to determine how programs are meeting the needs of the trainees during and after training. How programs are meeting the needs of the specialty.
- Value of training exams
- MCCKAP vs. ABP
- MCCKAP significantly more cost than ABP computerized exam
- More programs represented at this meeting used the ABP than the MCCKAP
- Exam questions of ABP exam have been validated
- Possible survey of program directors to assess need for 2 in-training exams
- Prolonged time to receive results from MCCKAP
- MCCKAP more similar to the initial board certification process.
- Research Curriculum
- Randall Wetzel, M.D. Chairperson
- A long discussion ensued concerning ABP research requirement and the difficulty in achieving the same.
- Dr. Wetzel cited the large numbers of requests per year that are sent to the ABP justifying a fellows incomplete research documentation with most being allowed then to sit for the board exam.
- A email survey will be sent to all fellowship directors for comments pertaining to developing a standardized research curriculum possibly providing some of this on the PedsCCM website.
- ABP research Requirements:
- Discussion continued to determine if these should be continued with the conclusion that modifying the requirements and better defining them would be in order. This will be taken by Dr. Wetzel to the ABP as our representative for discussion
The meeting ended at 2:20 PM. The next scheduled meeting of this committee will be held at the SCCM meetings in February in San Francisco, location and time to be announced.
Respectfully submitted;
Stephanie A. Storgion, M.D.
Chairperson, Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship Directors
