b. Increasing candidate pool/Results of FOPO proceedings
Dr.
Michelle Moss, representing the AAP and Dr. Stephanie Storgion, representing
the SCCM attended the meeting of the Federation of Pediatric Organizations
(FOPO) in San Diego on March 12 Ð13, 2001. This citation Jones MD, et.al. Federation of Pediatric Organizations Subspecialty
Forum. J Pediatr 2001:139;487-93
summarizes the meeting and the plans for future endeavors. The intent of this group is to review
the current process of training advanced level trainees in pediatric
specialties, and was the first time that representatives from all organizations
involved with this type of training participated in a combined meeting. There is to be a document from this
committee in the future that will outline the recommended changes in advanced
level training programs. This
should help pediatric critical care recruit more trainees and develop different
tracks for training. The next
meeting has not been announced at this time.
c.
2003 Match:
A
long discussion was held addressing all aspects of continuing the match process
for pediatric critical care. In a
vote to continue the match 34 voted to continue and 1 voted to discontinue the
match. The decision was to
continue the match process for critical care. There were three categories in which programs and applicants
could opt out of the match:
1. Those trainees in mentored research programs requiring
submission of documents for potential funding which includes a secured
fellowship position.
2. Those trainees entering into combined programs
3. Those trainees with spouses entering into training
programs (this was the most controversial. interpretation is up to fellowship
program directors)
The dates for the match for 2003 positions is not yet set and will be made available as soon as available.
It
was decided at this point to not link to other current match dates.
Monitoring
of participation in the match was voted on with 5 votes against. The monitoring will be done by Drs.
Brilli, Moss, and Storgion.
Referrals by program directors as to other programs not participating
fairly will be investigated and if a program is not participating fairly in the
match it will be publicized on the fellowship directors listserv. It was repeatedly voiced by the
attendees of the meeting that fair participation in the match was linked to the
integrity of our specialty training programs.
2. Pediatric Critical Care Competencies, Michelle
Mariscalco, M.D
Dr.
Michelle Mariscalco presented her survey on how programs plan to meet the
procedural skills competencies requirement for the ABP. Handout provided to
attendees.
3. ABP Requirements
A
discussion of the changes in the ABP requirements for documentation of life
long learning and the documentation of competencies in various areas. The attendees remarked that this is a
very difficult requirement to meet.
Dr. Mariscalco will continue to work with others to document plans of
programs to possibly determine for the specific information needed for critical
care.
