Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship Directors Committee

2001

We were to have met at the Pediatric Critical Care Colloquium in San Diego in September but the events of September 11 caused cancellation of that conference which was to have begun Sept. 13, 2001.

On November 7, 2001 the second pediatric critical care match was held through the NRMP.

The following are the statistics:

            Programs:

                        Enrolled programs                       47

                                    Withdrew                         1

                        Returned Rank order list               47

                        Active positions                          83

 (positions in the match)

Programs Filled              43%      20

                        Programs NOT filled        57%      26

                        Positions filled               63%      52

                        Positions NOT filled        37%      31

            Applicants:

                        Enrolled                                     76

                        Withdrew                                   14

Did not return rank order list         _5

                        Active applicants                         57

                        Matched applicants          91%      52

                        Unmatched applicants         9%        5

            Rank/Match Preference     Program             Applicant

                        Choice #1              17                       38

                        Choice #2               11                       6

                        Choice #3                 6                      2

                        Choice #4                 5                      3

                        Choice #5+             13                       3

                        Lowest                   10                       6

As can be seen  by the numbers, the goal of making this process better for the applicant has been met as 67% of applicants matched with their first choice institution and 77% matched with their first two choices.  There is a risk for the programs since only  33%  of positions filled were by first choice, but 54% were filled by first two choices.

For the advantage of applicants the match should still continue, however, the fate of the match lies with the program directors.

This information was provided to fellowship directors through the list serv and a lively discussion followed which will continue at our meeting in January 2002.

Michelle Mariscalco continues to work on the competencies issues and will present at the SCCM meeting.

Dr. Storgion attended the first meeting of the Federation of Pediatric Organizations representing the pediatric critical care fellowship directors (travel funded by her chairman Dr. Russell Chesney).  The meeting was held to discuss issues concerning advanced level training in pediatrics and the possibility of changing requirements for fellowships in pediatrics in the future.  The proceedings of this meeting were published in The Journal of Pediatrics October 2001 and a copy will be provided to the fellowship directors at the January SCCM meetings.  Dr. Michelle Moss was also in attendance representing critical care pediatrics as the AAP Section on Critical Care Chairperson.

The committee will meet on Sun, Jan 27, 4:40pm-6:00pm, Windsor B/C

Respectfully submitted

Stephanie Storgion, M.D.
