Appendix - Draft Statement on Managed Care

"DRAFT"

Statement of the Pediatric Section of the

Society of Critical Care Medicine

Committee on Finance

The members of the Pediatric Section of the Society of Critical Care Medicine are dedicated to
providing the highest quality care for critically ill infants and children. Pediatric critical care
medicine is a subspecialty of pediatrics that evolved out of the need for the most medically
vulnerable and technology dependent pediatric patients to be cared for by physicians with special
expertise. Pediatric critical care physicians, by virtue of subspecialty training and clinical
experience are uniquely qualified to coordinate and implement diagnostic evaluations and
complex therapeutic interventions for children in intensive care environments. Medical decision
making, the development of management pathways and protocols, measurement of outcomes,
and quality improvement initiatives must be conducted and supervised by pediatric critical care
physicians.
