A Match Program for Pediatric Critical Care Medicine

Colleagues:
A Press Announcement from the NRMP is going out today or tomorrow and will be sent to trade journals (Critical Care Med, J Peds, Peds, JAMA, and 600 other publications) announcing the Peds Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Match for entering fellows July 2001. This announcement will be on the AAMC and NRMP websites, also. The text of the Announcement is attached.
In addition, the announcement and the particulars will be put on the Peds Critical Care Medicine Website and will be linked to the AAMC website (Am Assoc of Medical Colleges) and the NRMP website.
Dates and concept for the match:
- The dates outlined below are intended to relieve the pressure on applicants and program directors to make very early decisions so that people need to decide during the early part of their internship in order to be competitive for the "best" programs or programs need to decide 2 years early to get the "best" applicant.
- Announcement of the match by press release - October 6, 1999.
- Official Agreements to Participate in the match sent to all program directors - sent out from NRMP December 1, 1999.
- Signed Agreement to participate for both Applicants and Programs returned to NRMP by July 19, 2000.
- Rank Order List (form) delivered to programs - September 13, 2000
- Rank Order List (form) returned to NRMP in Washington DC DEADLINE: October 11, 2000
- Match Day: November 8, 2000

Addendum (December 8, 1999)
The approved but not yet in effect, new ACGME requirements for residency education in pediatric critical care medicine are available at http://www.acgme.org/ These requirements go into effect in July 2000.

Reminder for Action
The deadline to complete your agreement to participate in the Match is July 19. Please complete this paperwork as soon as possible. Don't wait until the last minute. About 2/3 of the programs have sent in the paperwork. If you have not done so, please get the paperwork in.
Your Rank Order lists of applicants will be due October 11.
Match Day November 8.
I have heard a few rumors, from both applicants and program directors that some programs have accepted people outside of the match. I have investigated all such claims by calling the program directors. All such claims have been false with one exception. We remain remarkably unanimous in support of the match. One program did accept one applicant and told the applicant to keep it secret from all inquiries. I called the applicant and he felt some pressure to not divulge the name of the program that accepted him. I would appreciate it if the program director who accepted this applicant would call or e-mail me about their status.
Otherwise any other rumors that you hear can be reported to me and I will investigate the claims.
As stated previously, thus far all such rumors have been false and WE remain nearly unanimous in support for the match.
For 2002, we will need to try and organize a couple's match, as some couple's applying to two different fellowships have had some trouble making plans. Please call or e-mail me for questions or problems.
