PLAN/ACTION

Meeting called to order at 12:30pm.

Introduction of Co-chairs and all committee members.

Welcome to the inaugural meeting of the SCCM APN Committee.

Purpose of committee

This committee was formed to explore and define the role of the APN in Pediatric Critical Care throughout the nation. The Pediatric section of SCCM supports the formation of this committee.

Formulation of committee goals.

- Obtain information regarding the role of the APN in Pediatric Critical Care, including demographics, description of position, salary range, educational background, years of experience, etc.

This information will be useful in establishing guidelines for the use of APN’s in Pediatric Critical Care and for the formulation of future goals.

- Educate physicians and other health care providers regarding the role of the APN in Pediatric Critical Care.

A survey has been developed by a subcommittee of Pediatric Critical Care APN’s and will be distributed to APN’s at this meeting, on the web @ www.pedsccm.org , via e-mail, and via postal mail.

Addendum 10/7/1999: This survey is now available on PedsCCM... read more here...

Results of the survey will be summarized and presented to this committee at the SCCM meeting 2000.

A survey has also been developed for the supervisor’s of each APN to assess their perception of the role.

What issues are prevalent re: APN’s in PCC?

Should there be a national certification exam for APN’s in PCC?

How should an APN in PCC be prepared? Should educational preparation be standardized?

What is the responsibility of PCC APN’s to consult on critically ill children not based in the PICU?

What are current practice guidelines regarding billing and reimbursement?

What are current practice guidelines for hospital privileges in most institutions?

Do APN’s have standardized protocols to guide their practice?

Investigate the current number of graduate programs offering a degree as a Pediatric Critical Care Nurse Practitioner.

Would PICU APN’s be interested in taking a "knowledge assessment" to evaluate their knowledge base compared to PICU residents?

Dr. Conway proposed that PICU APN’s take a test that was previously administered to residents to evaluate their knowledge base.

The exam is currently undergoing revision and will be administered to interested APN’s in the near future.

Distribution of APN survey and supervisor survey.

All APN’s and APN Supervisors present were given a survey to complete and extra surveys to share with their colleagues. Each APN was also given a Supervisor survey for her/his supervisor.

All surveys will be returned to Judy Verger as soon as possible. The results of the survey will be analyzed and distributed to those who participate.

Meeting was adjourned.

Next meeting to be held at the SCCM in Orlando, Fla. In February 2000.

Minutes submitted by: Kelly Keefe Marcoux MSN, RN, CS, CCRN
