Introduction |
T. Bojko welcomed all in attendance. |
Introduction of Co-Chairpersons and all committee members. |
Each committee member described his/her role as an APN or supervisor of APNs in his or her PICU. Identification of diversity of job roles and settings |
Purpose of APN committee. |
T. Bojko reviewed the purpose of the committee for all new attendees. This committee was formed to explore and help define the role of the APN in pediatric critical care throughout the country. The committee would then have input and influence in the role development and how it is utilized. Would develop a written document that will delineate the role of APN in PICU. The committee could take whatever form its members choose but be multidisciplinary and committed to working as a group |
SCCM has requested clarification of the APN role. Committee will work to create a document that will delineate the APN role (inclusive of CNS and NP) in a position statement, to be submitted for review to SCCM Peds Section PAB. |
APN Survey |
Preliminary results of the survey that was given to PCC APNs were shared with the group. Further data collection, outcome studies are necessary for both CNS and NP in PICU. Need to clearly delineate each role. Ongoing data collection and analysis continues. |
The APN and Supervisor Surveys will be distributed to all PICUs in the U.S. to be completed. The surveys are available at: http://pedsccm.org/ ORG-MEET/SCCM-PEDS/APN_survey_readme.html |
Discussion regarding NPs in PICU and professional recognition of the role of APN |
Need to articulate the model of how or where NPs fit into the institution- rather that trying to utilize a traditional medical or nursing model. NNP versus PCCNP. NNP very clearly defined role, long- standing role, developed out of medical need for direct patient care. |
Identified PCCNP role as lacking uniformity in education and experience. Committee identified national certification as a means to develop standards. Programs educate to certification needs/ requirements. Can this committee push forward to obtain a certification for PICU APNs? Can we utilize ACNP exam as a blueprint to create a PCCNP exam? Preference would be to create an exam for APNs (CNS and NP) in Pediatrics. Martha Curley to contact/ pursue certification development with Jan Wyle at NAPNAP |
Presentation of Advanced Practice Position Statement - Draft |
Draft only inclusive of NP and CNS |
Discussion re: need for separate statements for CNS and NP. Agreed need a specific document rather than a vague document. Dont have safety standards to incorporate secondary to the lack of certification. CNS and NP have the same criteria for professional role components except for clinical judgement component for NP. Educational programs pair roles in education APN but the job description will fit the institutions needs. Committee would utilize terminology of APN rather than CNS in document the umbrella term may give greater credibility and strength with increased numbers. Martha Curley, CNS was agreeable that the position statement becoming more focused on NP rather than equitable distribution for NP and CNS for APN Position Statement. |
AAP Statement |
T. Bojko described the proposed AAP Guidelines for PICU and the recommendations for APN in PICUs |
Committee discussed recommendations for precepting new NP without Critical Care experience. Consensus to create whats optimal. Utilize the internet for resources, training modules. Agreement that establishment of minimum competencies for job role is necessary. |
Meeting adjourned. Minutes submitted by Maureen A. Madden, PCCNP |
Next meeting to be held at the SCCM Pediatric Critical Care Colloquium in September 2001, in San Diego, CA. |
