RECRUITING AAP/SECTION ON CRITICAL CARE MEMBERS

If you know of anyone who would be interested in joining the AAP and or the AAP Section on Critical Care, please forward the URL of this page to them or refer them to the links at the end of this message.

2002 has been an especially successful year for the AAP Section on Critical Care (SOCC). There are currently over 600 SOCC members. We emphasize our value to the pediatric critical care community to further one of our most important goals: recruiting pediatric critical care fellows and young faculty to the Section and the AAP.

The SOCC is an extremely effective voice for the subspecialty. The Section seeks to be as representative of all pediatric intensivists as possible. The Section enables members who are primarily interested in pediatric critical care to meet for the purpose of discussing and developing ideas and generating programs and projects which will improve the care of infants, children and adolescents.

The SOCC held the first Pediatric Critical Care Coding Course in October 2002. There were 108 attendees and evaluations overall were extremely positive. A future course is planned to coincide with the World Congress on Pediatric Intensive Care in June 2003 in Boston.

The SOCC proposes educational programming at the AAP National Conference and Exhibition (NCE) each year. The NCE consists of two portions: a professional program open to all members of the Academy and guests invited by the Section executive committee and a business meeting limited to SOCC members and invited guests only. In addition, the SOCC implements an annual call for scientific abstracts which are presented at the NCE and published in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.

During the NCE, the SOCC also holds an annual scientific meeting for presentation of oral abstracts and posters. The best in-training abstracts are awarded a cash prize. Additionally, at least two half days are devoted to a symposium on an important clinical critical care topic. The speakers are high quality and nationally recognized. Many of these symposia are held jointly with other AAP specialty sections allowing for subspecialty interaction not available in other critical care venues. At the NCE 2003 in New Orleans, the SOCC is cosponsoring a fellows course with the AAP Council on Sections entitled "Preparing for Life in Academics." This course is targeted to fellows at all levels of training in any subspecialty or post-residency training program.

Membership in the SOCC is open to fellows, post-residency training fellows, candidate fellows, resident fellows of the AAP. To encourage participation in the Section by residents and in-training fellows, the Section offers a discounted dues rate of $10 per year. To qualify for SOCC membership, one must be actively involved in some aspect of the study of life-threatening single or multiple-system organ failure caused by disease or injury, and interested in contributing to the objectives of the Section.

Enlarging and diversifying the Section requires your support and help. Encourage all your faculty and fellows to join the AAP and the Section on Critical Care. With your membership and support, we look forward to many productive years to come.
