Volunteer in Nepal 09/05/06
I am a Nepali pediatric intensivist trained in the US. My country, Nepal, is very beautiful with friendly people but, unfortunately, with very primitive health care services.
When I recently visited Nepal, I discovered they are in the process of opening a PICU. Someone has generously donated money for a maternal child care building at a missionary hospital. Also, there is a cardiac hospital (where they operate on 27 year old Tetralogys’!!). They do neonatal cardiac surgery with high post op mortalities because of lack of ICU trained staff.
The people there have no idea how a PICU runs, let alone treat patients!! Anyone who wants to go to Nepal (for 1-3 months) to train, please let me know. They will need experienced nurses, respiratory therapists, and pharmacists (and of course intensivist) to travel to Nepal and train a group of people. Timeline is October 2007. This is in a planning stage at present.
It is a great opportunity to serve as well as see this beautiful country. The people of Nepal will be very grateful. We will take very good care of you. We will have airfare, and lodging available for support staffs only (not physicians).
